The Craft of a Perfect Holiday

The licensed boats are not only insured but also have a Motor Launch registration license on board. These boats ensure safety standards and have a competent crew. When a boat is inspected by the government, it will have a registration number that displays a ‘TL’ plus a three-digit number. Check the identification of the registration and the tour operator and in case they do not possess the necessary documents, then find another sailing tour operator. Avoid vessels that bear lettering such as, ‘TFT’ or ‘TFG’ with the registration number followed by a four-digit number. Start your search again for another operator because this will be just a fishing vessel and not a licensed tour operator.

Tobago Cycling best in Caribbean
The Tobago International Cycling Classic, considered the most prestigious race on the Caribbean Cycling calendar, is scheduled for October 4 - 7.
Year 2006 marked the 20th anniversary of the Tobago International Cycling Classic.
The original vision was to give the local cycling community something different to look forward to, which was a change of location and setting from the normal routine of all events scheduled only for Trinidad. It was thought that the time had come to shift the paradigm somewhat and showcase Tobago, deservedly so, as a prime destination for hosting a premier cycling event.
This vision has outgrown its local appeal and now with more international focus, it has become an event that boasts over 100 international and regional competitors from Europe, the United States of America, Canada, South America, and the Caribbean, grinding out miles and miles on the Tobago roadways each year.
This being their 21st anniversary, they would like to move the boundaries further a field and bring this event to a wider audience worldwide, thereby stepping up their efforts, while securing the valuable support of the THA, the TDC, the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago, other valuable sponsors and stakeholders to establish Tobago as a premium sport tourism destination.
France boasts of the Tour de France, Hawaii is famous for the Iron Man Triathlon and - the Caribbean is legendary for the Tobago International Cycling Classic.

What to do in Tobago - in Water
Last month's newsletter featured things you could do in Tobago on land. This month, we will focus on the things you could do on water.
The waters of Tobago are crystal clear and teeming with life. Whether you want to just relax and enjoy the view, or get physical with some fishing or sports action, Tobago has it all.
Coco Motion
Coco Motion is a luxury 31ft speedboat run by Mona and Peter. It has twin 200 horsepower engines and is a luxurious and thrilling way to explore Tobago's coast. They'll take you snorkelling and sight seeing - and if you're lucky you can see bottle nose dolphins and listen to them with a hydrophone. Sport Fishing
If you fancy a day of serious fishing, then you'd be advised to take a camera along too. Tobago's offshore fishing season starts in October and runs right through till June. Coastal fishing is all year round and is excellent. 'Hard Play' Fishing Charters operate a sports fishing service for light tackle and flyfishing, both offshore and coastal. Capt. Gerard 'Frothy' De Silva and his crew have proudly released over 200 Marlin up to 700 lbs, over 200 Sailfish and have caught Swordfish, Long Bill Spearfish and Mako Shark in the waters off Tobago. The Tobago International Game Fishing Tournament is held each year in March from the beautiful fishing village of Charlotteville, Tobago has some of the Caribbean's most productive big game fishing grounds.

Welcome to Half Moon Blue's September 2007 Newsletter.
It's September - The rainy season is in full swing in Tobago, but there will still be some blue skies and good seas for swimming. Leatherback turtle hatching continues.
The beautiful island of Tobago sports a festive look and celebrates a mini-Carnival in September. 'Tobago Fest', as this mini-Carnival is known, with its new-style 'mas', is just what the name suggests - a smaller version of Trinidad Carnival. While Trinidad's 'Greatest Show on Earth' takes place religiously every year on the Monday and Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday, 'Tobago Fest' offers masqueraders the opportunity to enjoy the revelry at another time of the year - with a distinctly Tobagonian flavor the second time around.
A few years ago two resourceful Tobago Mas' enthusiasts invited the National Carnival Bands Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NCBA) to assist in producing a Trini style Carnival on the sister isle within the low visitor period of late September. With the support of The Tobago House of Assembly, though it is just a few years old, already the Tobago Fest is taking off with its own Carnival season.
Popular masquerade bands from Trinidad travel across to the sister-isle to participate in both the main event as well as the host of other activities on the agenda - including 'night mas' (which gives you a chance to 'jump up' in the cool evening breeze under the starlit sky), a queen and talent show, steelband competitions, calypso shows and street parties.
A unique feature of Tobago Fest is the Traditional Mas which features Fancy Sailors, Beasts and Imps, Authentic and Fancy Indians, Jab Jabs and many more who contribute to the Fest and bring alive the cultural portrayals of yesteryear.
The Tobago International Cycling Classic - an Island wide road race with international competitors - is held over 4 days in the middle of the month. You can compete or just stand on the sidelines and cheer on the competitors!
Tee off with some great golf at the Tobago Open Golf Tournament, held in September at the breathtaking Tobago Plantations Golf Course.
Tobago also celebrates its Republic Day on 24th September.
It won't be long before the 'Tobago Fest' features on the holiday calendars along with other major holidays and fests. In the meantime, enjoy the uncluttered beginnings of a festival in the making! What to do in Tobago - on Land
Tobago is a beautiful and fertile island with a rich history. There are plenty of things to do on this island - here are just a few examples.
Scenery and Real Life Caribbean
Hire a jeep and go to Speyside at the north end of the island. Although Tobago is only 27 miles long, it'll take you a day to travel up and down the island. The roads in Tobago are quite good and improving all the time, but they are few and far between, and tend to wind around the coastline - giving you spectacular scenic views. The view from the 'Speyside Lookout' is lovely, and you may very well be standing there alone with your camera. Speyside is predominantly known on Tobago for it's diving opportunities. From Speyside you can see Goat Island and Little Tobago, a 450-acre bird sanctuary. Trips to these islands can be arranged locally.
Argyle Waterfall
Tobago has a number of beautiful waterfalls - in particular the Argyle Waterfall. It's a climb with cool pools of water as you go, and lovely light for photos. The Falls are a slippery pathway to reach and a guide will help you reach them safely and they are well worth the small climb. A camera and a swimwear are a must.
Scarborough, Tobago's Capital
Worth visiting to see Fort King George at the top of the hill overlooking the harbor. Just head for the hill and go right to the top - past the hospital. Fabulous view and breeze. Good museum. Nowhere to eat or drink so take your own. The Fort and Museum are a must to visit. Scarborough is worth a visit in itself but only if you've done everything else. There's not much to see or do there and it's not particularly pretty. Lots of fast-food eateries, a good outdoor market is worth a visit, but that's about it.

You can rent mountain bikes for US$10 per day.

Horseback Rides
The Looking Out Stables take horses out on to the beach and into the hills. Rides are twice a day. More details are on the website www.action-tobago.com
The Rainforest
This is said to be one of the oldest rainforests in the world. Go with a proper guide and read up on the rain forest first. You'll need plenty of water, lots of anti-mozzie stuff and some sturdy shoes. It's not a place for flip-flops.
Trinidad
You can fly to Trinidad for the day for about £20 return. There are regular, daily flights between Tobago (Crown Point Airport) and Trinidad (Piarco airport). Return Fare - TT$200 (about £20). You can book in advance through your hotel or at a travel agent at the airport. The flight takes only 15 mins, but it's a bit of a taxi ride from the airport at the other end to any of the sights - Port of Spain, Caroni Swamp or Maracas Bay. You can do it - go early and come back late, and prepared to be hot and sweaty.
There's a lot to see in Trinidad. It's worth doing your homework before you go. Trinidad is a complete contrast from Tobago. It's a bustling industrial island, and you should be crime conscious. There are pretty parts of Trinidad - mainly in the north in the hills, away from the airport and the city.
