Offering a kaleidoscope of colorful festivals all year long, the tropical islands of Trinidad and Tobago have stitched a tapestry of their culture, cuisines and lifestyles. Tobago opens out a culture of sport with festivals celebrating the International Half-Marathon at Trinidad, on November 2, 2008, with Tobago International Duathlon & 5km on November 9, 2008, the Spirit & Kids Triathlon in Trinidad on November 16, 2008 and the Lady Chancellor Hill Charity Fun Run & Walk on November 29, 2008 in Trinidad.
With a varied spectrum of festivals, the islands bring in their love of music with the National Chutney Monarch Competition in Trinidad on November 29, 2008. The tropical islands of Trinidad and Tobago open up a path of rhythm with the National Chutney Monarch Competition in Trinidad. Originally, Chutney was a rhythmic up-tempo song that was accompanied by the dhantal, harmonium and the dholak. Evolving with the times, the Chutney is composed today with soca and calypso rhythms acquiring much exposure in competitions between bands that play African, Western and Indian instruments. The Parang on Esplanade that takes place on Tobago, 11th November, 2008 is another exposé of the musical scene in Tobago. Originating from the Spanish word 'parranda' which means a group of singers who sing serenades, the 'Parranderos' or the 'Parang' bands consist of four to six singers who sing and play various instruments such as the violin, the bandol, the tambourine, the box bass, the mandolin, the guitar, the cello, the tiple, the scratcher (güiro), the claves, the wood block, the clapper, the cuatro and the maracas. Though there are competitions, the Parang bands entertain each household where songs are dedicated to the family who in turn serve them food and drink. Today, soca and calypso rhythms are blended with the Parang compositions accompanied by Indian drumming and Chutney melodies. Carols by Candle Lights in Tobago on 12th November 2008 is yet another joyful rendition in anticipation of Christmas. Tobago celebrates the Season of Joy every Tuesday through November and December 2008 with a Christmas caravan winding through the quaint villages of Tobago.
Cultural Explosion Itsy Bitsy Folk Theatre showcases local talent with heritage folk arts of the country traditional folklore songs and music that takes place every Tuesday in November. As a fun event, the Fun Fish Tournament takes place in Tobago from the 18th-19th November 2008 with a non-stop festival of fun, food and fishing. Half Moon Blue at Half Moon Blue Resorts offers a delightful haven where you can revive and relax in a romantic ambience with the fragrance of Caribbean cuisines and warm hospitality.

Explore the Caribbean Islands of Trinidad and Tobago that share a common history. Both islands are situated very close to one another and were discovered by Christopher Columbus.
An Eloquent History
Take a peek into the history of Trinidad and Tobago that reveals an exciting past. Trinidad was governed by Spanish rulers until 1797, while Tobago switched hands between the French, Dutch and Courlanders and eventually ended up with the British in 1814. In 1888, the British incorporated both islands of Trinidad and Tobago into a single crown colony. In 1962, these islands gained independence from British rule and finally became a republic in 1976 and in 1834, the landmark slavery-abolishing act was established. The years between 1845 and 1917 saw many workers coming from other parts of the world to these islands to work in sugarcane plantations. Hence you will find the local population to be a mix of races and religions.

February 2008 Newsletter COLOR. CULTURE. CELEBRATION.
Do you want to lose yourself in the midst of one of the most exotic carnivals? Do you dream of relaxing on a beautiful island surrounded by folklore and fabulous cuisine? Then come to Tobago and witness a celebration of exotic flavors that take you to the magical realms of one of the world’s greatest street festivals. Celebrate the Carnival in Tobago and take home lingering memories that evoke the spirit of freedom. Celebrate your holiday with splashes of vibrant hues, amazing music and an experience filled with tropical sensations. The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival takes on hues of color and culture right after Christmas till its culmination on the 4th and 5th of February. Held every year, this astounding Carnival continues with its infectious merriment right through to the 20th of February with countless revelers taking to the streets to ’play mas’ (short form of masquerade).
EXPLORE A VIBRANT PAST...
Introduced to Trinidad and Tobago by the French in 1783, the Carnival was originally a splendid masquerade enjoyed by the owners of the plantations. The African slaves were not allowed to take part in the festivities of their owners. As time passed, they celebrated their own festival with rituals and folklore. In 1838, when slavery was abolished, they celebrated their freedom with a special Carnival on the streets with new immigrants adding different facets to this mesmerizing event. Taking on religious nuances through the years, the term Carnival stems from the Latin Carne Vale or ’Farewell to the flesh’. As a period between the holy day of Christmas and the beginning of the strict season of Lenten, the revelers created the ’baccanal’ or a time to enjoy wine and revelry. The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is like looking through a kaleidoscope of celebrations with masquerades, competitions, music, wine and food that is enticing, enchanting and exuberant.
Exploding on to the streets with the Kings and Queens Costume Competition, J’Ouvert, Masquerade Band of the Year and the Panorama, the Carnival rocks with the enchanted culture of Tobago. The non-stop cavorting displays theatrical traditional characters like Jab Jab, Midnight Robber, Pierrot Grenade and Dame Lorraine, Floats and costumes planned months ahead by designers in hopes of creating the most original costume. The music of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival gives you the fascinating steel pan, an acoustic' instrument and soca or soul calypso rhythmic music with competitions for the best music bands.
Take a break from the excitement and explore the lovely Tobago beaches. Enrich the palate with Creole cuisine and plan adventurous trips on your Tobago holiday. Take off into the vibrant blue waters on a ferry ride from the starting points of Mt. Irvine Bay or Pigeon Point and watch the fascinating Tobago coastline. Go scuba diving and deep sea diving to experience the wondrous sea life.
DISCOVER A PLEASURE PARADISE
Feel the lilting rhythm of the music of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival as it vibrates down the quaint streets to the gorgeous Half Moon Blue Resorts, the French colonial resort at the Donkey Cart House, Bacelot Bay, Tobago. Stop and rest at Half Moon Bay with its lovely décor, tempting cuisine and resort amenities that stay etched in your memory.
